Jean Sime from KWE Publishing—I had the sweetest encounter this weekend that got me thinking about how we promote our books. 📚 A little girl approached me at lunch with a wooden box full of DIY bracelet supplies—safety pins, rubber bands, beads, and letters. She asked if I wanted to buy a bracelet, with all proceeds going to the ASPCA, which saved her dog. Her little sister chimed in, sharing that their grandma taught them how to make these bracelets. How could I resist? I ended up buying a bunch! 😍 This experience reminded me that promoting our books isn’t much different. During a recent presentation for the Podium RVA Hopewell Teen Conference Kim Wells Eley spoke and shared her qualifications for speaking with the group. Here's why they invited us to speak!

Author Shirley R. Hawkins, author of If These Walls Could Talk, describes being promoted to supervisor but then having to repeatedly train men who were unqualified for the role. This caused extra work and messes that the she had to clean up. After the third time of this happening, the speaker went to headquarters and told the head manager they would not train another person and would only stay if this stopped. She was sharing this story on June 22, 2024, at 508 St. James Street in Richmond in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. This is the location where she worked as a supervisor when the building served as training center for blind and visually-impaired workers.

Author Shirley R. Hawkins describes how Zarina Fazaldin was trying to find out if someone was still living who worked at her current residence when it was the Virginia Institute for the Blind. Shirley tells about meeting Zarina at a restaurant and inviting her to an open house for Richmond's Jackson Ward district the following week.
